Botox® wrinkle-busting effects become apparent within a few days. The benefits of Botox® will last between three and five months, depending on the individual patient's facial animations. Three treatments a year are the norm, and your face will not have a frozen-non-expressive look, as is common in over-users of the product. The idea is to soften lines in the forehead, around the eyes, and between the brows without totally paralyzing them. Botox® is made from Botulinum Toxin Type A, a neurotoxin derived from bacteria. It is FDA approved, and very safe when injected by a medical professional.
New uses for Botox® are emerging all the time. Women with a small or retrusive chin may have overactive lower lip muscles which accentuate the crease under the lower lip. Injections over the chin can correct this, as well as wrinkles in the chin pad itself. Other areas that improve significantly with Botox® are the "neck bands" in the neck and wrinkles in the lower eyelid. It is also effective to create a brow-lift that lifts the eyebrows. Botox® can also be used to lift the angles of the mouth - i.e., correcting the downturn that often occurs with age - and help smooth out 'smoker's lines' around the mouth...
The next step to achieving a younger, natural look is a filler called Radiesse®. Radiesse® is an injectable used to fill out hollows in the cheeks, mid face, nasio-labial folds and marionette lines. It can also be used to achieve cheek augmentation without implants and usually lasts about one year to eighteen months. Together Botox® and Radiesse® provide the patient instant gratification in the form of a smooth, unlined face with more youthful contours. Radiesse is not recommended for lips or under eye hollows, however, Lisa does have two excellent fillers to address those problems as well. Restalyne has been found to be the best filler to inject in the tear trough, thus filling in the hollows under the eyes and providing the patient with a rested, more attractive look. Both Restalyne® and Juvederm™ can be used in the natural augmentation of the lip area, with a lasting effect of about 6-8 months.
For those of you who are willing to see results gradually, we highly recommend Sculptra® treatments. Sculptra® is an injectable produced from poly-L-lactic acid that contains a deep-dermal thickening agent that works over a period of about 3 months, but whose results are almost permanent. Sculptra® restores volume around the eyes - especially in the 'tear trough' or 'eye bag' area - as well as over the cheek bones, in the lower cheeks and around the chin area, and for filling depressions and scars (i.e., acne scars) . Sculptra® is also used to diminish fine lines around the mouth and on the face and to de-crease the neck. After treatment, the body builds its own collagen over the following four to six weeks and one or two additional treatments may be needed to achieve the desired correction. It takes a month or more to see the results of each treatment and the improvements become increasingly apparent after the final treatment. The results last for up to two years and when more Sculptra® is needed; just one or two injection sessions may be enough. Because the results are progressive, no-one would guess you have had any 'work' done at all. It usually takes about three Sculptra treatments spaced out about a month apart to achieve a full face correction that will virtually last forever, or at least several years, with minimal touch-ups.

The final step of our three step process is IPL. IPL is a laser treatment that delivers high intensity pulses of broadband light that is different from the narrow band light of lasers. IPL, which stands for intensed pulsed light, is non-ablative meaning that is does not damage the surface of the skin. The intense light is delivered to the deeper parts of the skin (dermis) and leaves the superficial aspect of the skin (epidermis) untouched. . The thermal effect of IPL also causes production of new collagen, leading to improvement in wrinkles. There is minimal downtime and the patient can return to work and other activities next day with no signs of treatment apart from a refreshed and tightened skin.

Patients have also found that the great advantage of Botox®, Radiesse® / Sculptra® and IPL treatments is that they all are complimentary to each other and are perfectly complimentary so they make it possible to offer all three together.

     We know the current economy has all of us looking for the best prices on everything, including cosmetic procedures.

     First, we want to assure all our patients that the aforementioned products used by our office are all authentic and bought directly from the manufacturer in the United States and not from an aftermarket pharmaceutical company online.
     You may think these products are the same, but they are not. Just as a counterfeit handbag may at first look authentic, when you examine it a little more closely, you can see the poor quality and stitching which are dead giveaways of its non-authenticity.
     With fillers and Botox that are injected into your skin, the consequences are much more serious than just having a cheap looking handbag.
     Botox and authentic fillers have defining marks of authenticity and serial and lot numbers that are documented by the manufacturer upon purchase. The reason for this is that if for some reason a negative reaction to the filler or Botox should occur, the company that manufacturers it will stand behind it 100%. This guarantee assures you that the ingredients are pure and FDA approved and uncompromised in any way.
     If the product is not authentic, it most likely has ingredients that may not be safe for absorption into the dermis. Countries outside of the US do not have the stringent laws that the US does concerning pharmaceuticals, and substitutions are used frequently that are not as costly as the original, but can result in catastrophic results. At the least, they will not last as long as the authentic product suggests, and at the worst, they can damage the dermis permanently, resulting in scarring, hard lumps under the skin that can only be removed surgically if at all.
     If something like that were to occur with a counterfeit product, the authentic manufacturer (Allergan, Bioform, Medicis) WILL NOT BE LIABLE for any health issues and will not stand behind the product. The office injecting the counterfeit product is technically liable, but you will have most likely signed away any legal action against them on the consent form, and even if that were possible, you still would be left with a damaged face and years of litigation.
     If you still insist on going to a practice that offers cheaper prices, there are some steps you can do to protect yourself. Insist on seeing the products box or vial BEFORE injection. Ask for the Lot # on the box or vial so that you can check online to see if it is an authentic # or counterfeit #. Or contact the manufacturer and they can confirm if it is indeed their product or not.     Be smart! Beware! If someone is selling Botox and fillers at a price far below all the other practices in the same area, be cautious.

Decide what disturbs you most when you look in the mirror and grapple with it. Rejuvenation comes in many shapes and sizes. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery, while surgical procedures are down a whopping 70 percent in this economy, filler services — by which they mean injectables, peels and laser procedures — are up an even more whopping 300 percent. That’s because new fillers are better, techniques more sophisticated and practitioners more experienced. I took my Connecticut client to Lisa Topham, R.N., P.C. in Norwalk, CT, because Lisa’s been doing what she does for 23 years, and because I knew from other women that she is gifted, low-key in her approach and that she refuses to do procedures she feels are either wrong for the client or just wrong in her own estimation.

She gave Jane a light chemical peel, removed the furrowed brow with three painless injections of Botox and delicately lifted the “puppet” lines from her nose to her mouth with what’s now called the “liquid face lift.” This is the newest method of adding needed volume to faces and lessening (in this case) the depth of the nasolabial lines by using filler — hyaluronic acid, aka Restylane, Perlane and Juvederm — not just in the lines (the old way) but above them. It’s a nonsurgical lift, a kind of “revolumizing” she’s after (a volume that New York dermatologist Patricia Wexler says starts waning in the 40s).

Lisa says that with the new, semi-permanent fillers — her favorite being Restylane but also Sculptra, a poly-L-lactic-acid filler that requires three separate treatments — ”we can give back more of the face’s original volume by restoring some of the contours it once had.” It’s a kind of buttressing, over which your own tissue then can drape naturally. The downtime depends on how many places the filler is used but is minimal — a couple of days of using heavy makeup on any places that might bruise. And the Restylane, Lisa said, would last at least 18 months (Sculptra, up to four years).

I know that self-esteem isn’t found in a needle. But I also know how many women feel lost when it comes to how to look less exhausted.

Don’t just moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Many doctors and estheticians would have given my client rich moisturizers. But Lisa Topham wanted her to continue exfoliating her skin, and so gave her products (she likes Obagi’s) that contain Retin-A and hydroquinone. “If you’re not removing dead skin first, slathering on moisturizer — no matter how good it is — “is like putting glue on dead skin.” Hence Jane’s mysterious breakouts and blotchiness.

Jane was told she would peel for a while with the new program, but that she could control how fast the action was, and further, that in three weeks she’d have fresher, glowier skin.

In three weeks, Jane was up and running, her skin moist and clear and her sense of herself altered enough that she found herself smiling brightly to the world. She had spent roughly $2,000 (including teeth whitening) — not a breeze for her, but less than the weekend spa visit she’d been contemplating before we spoke.

I know that self-esteem isn’t found in a needle. But I also know how many women feel lost when it comes to how to look less exhausted. And in a world where a glowing woman telegraphs triumph rather than defeat, a little modern wizardry can sometimes be just what the Goddess ordered.

A warning to our patients about over-diluted Botox!

Botox prices are all over the place, and we want our patients and others to be aware of why that may be. We know there is a lot of competition out there right now, but please think of this before you decide where to go to get injected.

Botox comes in a dehydrated, freeze dried form and it is mixed with a saline solution before injection. The dilution standard for optimal results is set by Allergan; however, it is up to the practitioner to dilute it with the proper amount of solution. If it is too diluted, it will not last, and sometimes not work at all. And this usually is the case in those injectors whose Botox prices are unrealistically low. We dilute by strict Allergan guidelines which is why our Botox lasts as long as it is supposed to last, and sometimes even longer. The telltale sign that Botox has been diluted too much is when it wears off in 6-8 weeks. One can expect some movement of the injected area after 4 weeks, but total dissipation after 6-8 weeks is a sign that you were injected with watered down Botox.

So the question you need to decide is, are you really saving money if you buy Botox cheaper than the normal pricing range, if you have to get re-injected every 2 months or less. Think about it!!! In this case, cheap is expensive!

While the ASPS Conference did not have many surprises in the way of new products, Allergan was front and center and continues to research and integrate new ways for Botox to be used in the quest for stopping aging in its tracks. The trend in botox seems to be heading in women wanting to look less lined, but more natural than in the past. The less is more approach seems to be the most popular one. That seems to be the case with fillers also. Radiesse has gained popularity with its ability to fill in nasio-labial folds and sunken in area of the face, giving instant gratification to the patient. For those more willing to wait to see results, Sculptra is the product that is now being used to fill in all areas of the face that have hollowed out. While it takes longer to see results, the reward is in its longevity and its ability to help the skin rejuvenate its collagen production. Juvederm and Restalyne are still a favorite for lips, nasio-labial folds, and tear troughs (restalyne). But the patients have opted out of the "trout pout" look, preferring a more natural but fuller lip. More to follow.....

As a facelift tightens the skin, Sculptra®Aesthetic adds volume non surgically. Approved by the U.S. Food and
